The launch campaign carried more than 80 spacecraft into low-Earth orbit over an 18-month period, using three different boosters launched from three continents. Meeting the challenge of the arduous schedule and achieving success in the Iridium program demonstrate Lockheed Martin's commitment to providing global customers with a full line of spacecraft to serve a wide array of applications. The Iridium telecommunications system was initially a space-based, wireless personal communications network developed by Motorola for system owner and operator, Iridium LLC, Washington. The individual spacecraft are interconnected via crosslink antennas that allow satellites to communicate among themselves without the use of ground stations to provide continuous global telephone service. The system provides users with instantaneous global telephone services of all types, including voice, data, fax, and paging. Iridium currently provides services to the United States Department of Defense and launched commercial service in March 2001. Space Systems Company12257 S.
